Celebrating Juneteenth: A Beacon of Hope, Courage, and Unity in DEI Efforts
By Demorrious Robinson and Marley Bessette, Co-Leads, BIPOC Affinity Group
As we approach Juneteenth, we are reminded of a pivotal moment in American history—a day of emancipation and new beginnings. For multi-ethnic companies deeply invested in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Juneteenth is more than a historical milestone; it is a beacon of hope, courage, and unity and an opportunity to have impact. Juneteenth symbolizes the triumph over adversity and the collective power we derive from our diverse backgrounds.
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day is a powerful reminder of the power of hope and the ongoing journey toward equality, equity, and justice. It is an opportunity to reflect on our strides and the path ahead in building a truly inclusive workplace. By learning from history, we can better understand the systemic issues that still exist today and innovate for a more inclusive future.
Here are actionable steps you might consider in honor of Juneteenth:
- Celebrate Diversity: Organize events and discussions that highlight your employees’ diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Mentorship Programs: Implement mentorship programs that support underrepresented groups, helping them navigate their careers and achieve their full potential.
- Have the Courage to Face Challenges Head-On: The courage of those who fought for freedom and justice is a source of inspiration. In our DEI journey, demonstrate courage—courage to address biases, challenge the status quo, and make difficult decisions that pave the way for a more equitable workplace.
- Bias Training: Consider comprehensive training to help employees recognize and combat unconscious biases.
- Create Space for Open Dialogue: Create safe spaces for open and honest conversations about race, equity, and inclusion. We can build a stronger, more cohesive organization by embracing our differences and learning from each other.
- Create Educational Initiatives: Offer resources and training that educate employees on the history of Juneteenth and its relevance to current DEI efforts.
- Review and Update Company Policies: Continuously review and update company policies to ensure they promote inclusivity and equity.
- Collaborative Projects: Encourage cross-departmental projects that bring together employees from diverse backgrounds.
- Affinity Groups: Support affinity groups that provide a platform for employees to connect, share experiences, and drive positive change.
As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us reaffirm our commitment to DEI. Let this day inspire us to continue our work with hope, courage, and insight.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Together, we can bend that arc ever closer to justice, equality, and unity in the workplace and our own communities.
Happy Juneteenth!
