What is Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD)?
Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is Microsoft’s comprehensive virtual desktop application. It essentially acts as a service that allows Microsoft to manage much of the security, updates, and maintenance typically associated with a terminal server and provides a simpler user experience. With AVD you can provide staff with easy access to self-hosted applications without the need to set up Virtual Private Network (VPN) or open ports on the firewall. It is a unique product that is both more secure and easier to use than the solution it is replacing. Most organizations already have licensing for it via Microsoft 365 A3, E3, Business Premium, or higher licenses and only need to pay for the Azure resources which makes it a cost-effective solution.
Benefits
• Secure remote access without having to connect to a VPN and a simple user experience
• Easy Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) implementation integrated with Azure’s Active Directory (AD)
• Remote desktop access as a service – Less to manage or maintain than in a server environment and more efficient
• Only pay for what you use – power on when accessed/automatically shut off, automatic scaling as needed
• Can be integrated with Microsoft Intune, a configuration and automation system, Azure Active Directory, and Microsoft’s security management platform
Use Cases
• Full remote virtual desktop to replace Citrix or VMware Horizon environments. Allows secure access to local applications without a VPN
• Access full versions of Windows applications like Excel or QuickBooks on a Mac
• Templated lab or classroom room virtual desktops
• Replacement option for any existing terminal server
